The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) released a report July 1, 2016 on suicide relating to occupation. Construction ranked number two for the highest number of suicides. The nature of the work and the culture make us prone to specific risk factors, including: “old school” or “tough guy” mentality, sleep deprivation, layoffs, and chronic pain.
Some signs that indicate risk:
-talking about feeling trapped
-increasing use of alcohol
-acting agitated, behaving recklessly
-extreme mood swings
Keep an eye on one another out there. If you witness a brother or sister exhibiting signs of risk, or if you need help, contact the Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
