Brothers and Sisters

I hope that all is well with you and your family. The construction season is upon us and the staff of Local 612 is focused on creating jobs for our members as many of you have had intermittent or no employment at all over the past couple of years. Although private work is scarce there is a slow but steady increase in public work however the projects are still being awarded at prices below engineers estimate. I am optimistic that as the volume of work continues to grow prices will return to normal levels

The HIRE [Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment] Act to extend highway funding recently signed by President Obama is encouraging. The bill would provide tax breaks and incentives to companies who hire new employees as well as funding many transportation projects. Among other things it will pump $19.5 Billion into the Highway Trust Fund to insure its solvency, restore $8.7 Billion in funding for states and restore the funding to the federal highway program’s 2009 level of $42 Billion. As for private and commercial work I am confident that when the banks loosen up a bit and financing is easier to obtain then we will see resurgence in the private market which will in turn create additional opportunities for our members.

As Local 612 marks its 75th anniversary it is important to remember that our industry has had its share of ups and downs throughout our history and we owe a great deal of gratitude to those members who brought us this far. Local 612 is a progressive and forward thinking local that is establishing new contractor relationships and developing new markets for our members. To assure our continued success into the future it is the obligation of each and every member of Local 612 to be the most skilled and proficient operators and mechanics in our industry thus providing job security for you and value to our contractors. You have my commitment that the staff at Local 612 is working hard to restore full employment opportunities for our members. Thank you for your hard work and dedication.

In Solidarity,
Ed Taylor
