Welcome to Local 612 Dispatch Online
Business Representative Charles Lascurain Charlie here, part time dispatcher and district 2 Rep. This is what’s happening in my Area. Starting at TransAlta, this winter approximately 16 members remained at the mine to maintain OSM compliance. This basically means they are keeping up drainage etc. so that the mine doesn’t turn into a big mud hole before it can be properly reclaimed. The reclamation at the mine will be an in house operation again this year bringing back 60 to 70 of the laid off miners for 4 to 5 months under the TCM contract. The Mine has also sold one of its’ BE1370 draglines to a mining company in Florida. They had some misfortune with a similar machine and need the parts. Dismantling the big digger is going to require some site prep work that has been let to Sterling Breen, one of our signatory contractors. The down side is that all the dismantling has gone to a non-union company from Texas, who at this point is planning to bare rent their cranes from Lampson International. I have been talking with CCC inc. and Lampson; we may yet supply them with a hand or two. Alstom Power and NAES are going full tilt on a shutdown at TransAlta Generation Facilities. This Job was expected to run 90 days but then the #1unit is slated for September. They are refitting the #2 boiler unit with additional cooling tubes to accommodate the hotter imported coal. They also have a number of other repairs and upgrades going on during the outage. The General Presidents’ Project Maintenance Agreement is the agreement that controls, and it pays full wages and Bennies from our Master Labor Agreement. Currently we have two Coast Cranes with oilers, One Snell Tower, and two forklifts going 6-10s two shifts a day on the shutdown at TransAlta and just recently Campbell brought out a 500 ton Hydraulic, for some heavy stuff, with two operators and two oilers for about a week. A few weeks ago a project got under way at the Mossyrock Dam. GE is refurbishing the turbines and doing some spillway maintenance for Tacoma City Light. This project is part of the National Maintenance Agreement and pays MLA wages and benefits for two of our hands working for NAES Power Contractors. These guys are running the in house 400ton Bridge Crane, and doing some of the material handling as well. If the dismantling phase of this Job goes well and stays on schedule, these guys will be out there for the reassembly also. We aren’t getting swamped with dispatches yet, but some contractors are calling back their core hands and requesting grade engineers, I have to think the season will start sooner than later. We may not see the real strong work season that we have enjoyed the past few years because the Housing market dropped through the floor, but there is going to be work if our Contractors can sharpen their pencils and beat out the non-Union bidders in town. Everybody’s hungry. Don’t forget this is an election year, and everybody needs to remember to vote, vote your jobs. Candidates that will help us get work are the ones we want to support no mater what side of the political fence they may be on. If you don’t know or haven’t got a preference in a race ask us and we will give you some suggestions. As of the second week of July 2008 we have 245 members on Group 1 list.
